SYMPHONY

Symphony had bad dreams that night.

She had bad dreams about monsters. Horrible monsters with big, slimy tentacles, all wrapping around her. They were like octopuses, only they had angrier eyes and big snapping teeth.

And when they wrapped around her, when they tightened around her so she couldn’t breathe, they gobbled her up and swallowed her up, and she tried to scream, but she couldn’t, which made everything worse.

And that wasn’t even the scariest thing.

The scariest thing was when she fell into the big, horrible mouth of the scary octopus with teeth.

Boy.

He was sitting there.

Looking right at her.

Smiling, as dark black blood trickled down his bitten lips, all over his chin, dripping down onto the floor.

Holding something in his hands.

His mouth all covered in blood.

But Symphony didn’t want to look in his hands.

She didn’t want to see what he was holding.

Even though she already knew what he was holding and even though she tried not to think of it and tried not to remember because it made her feel so bad whenever she thought about it.

She tried to move her eyes away from it.

She tried not to look at it.

She tried not to remember, and she tried not to see…

Because the pain in her belly was getting stronger now.

And her heart was going to explode.

The blood.

The smell.

The burning smell.

The taste…

She saw Boy leaning down and burying his sharp teeth into the thing he was holding and laughing as blood went everywhere and octopus tentacles sprouted out of his back and reached over to her and grabbed her and—

She opened her eyes.

She sat up. She was breathing really heavy. Shaking. Sweating, even though the wind felt cold. It was dark. Wherever she was, it was dark, and it was cold, and…

She was in some sort of cabin or shed. She could see the moonlight shining in through the window next to her. It was still dark outside then. How long had she been asleep? Maybe not long at all. And she was scared to go back to sleep now, too. Scared, in case she had the dream again.

The dream of the octopus.

The dream of Boy.

The dream of what he was holding…

No.

No, don’t think of that.

Don’t think of that, and it’ll all be okay.

She’d not let herself think about it before, so she didn’t have to think about it now.

But she could still taste it on her lips.

The taste of pennies…

She looked around the shed to try and think of something else. She saw the dog sitting there and looking at her. She liked the dog. The dog seemed nice. He sat with her earlier and let her stroke him, and he wagged his tail. He had a bit of a limp. And even though Symphony didn’t really know him, she hoped he was okay. She didn’t want anything bad to happen to him. She wanted him to be okay.

She didn’t want to lose him like she lost everyone else.

She looked over at the lady then. She couldn’t see her properly because it was dark.
